1. Title: The Use of Landmines/ By: Alejandra Galindo
2. Intro. Approach: Anecdote / Descriptive
3. Thesis: Antipersonnel landmines kill thousands of people every year.
4. The introduction was effective. It talked about landmines, and how they do not recognize a cease-fire; they continue killing or maiming for many years after the conflict is over. They do not discriminate between soldiers or civilians. It does say that the land mines protect military establishements. It is very expensive to De-mine the field after the conflicts. A lot of the refugees can not return to the places that they live because there are active land mines still located on there fields. I think the introduction described the disadvantages Antipersonnel landmines very well.
5. Conclusion Approach: Call to action
6. The conclusion was effective. It asks the U.S. to sign the Mine Ban Treaty and to put pressure on the other countries to do the same. The weapon technology is already advanced and the world does not need to wait for more new developments in order to ban the use of landmines. It is not OK for U.S citizens not to know where the landmines are planted.

Essay 1
1. Title: The Desired Look: Nothing But Bones / By: Rebecca Patton
2. Intro Approach: Description
3. Thesis: The obsession of many young girls over their appearance or weight has led to a
growing number of people who have developed an eating disorder to try to deal with their
lack of self-esteem or other related problems.
4. The introduction was really good. It explained how young girls are way to obbsesed about
what they look like. They are exercising to much and treating it like it is a
compitition. The thesis statement also told how these dangerous methods of trying to get skinny
are leading to eating disorders that can eventually kill these girls. These young girls have a lack of self-esteem and other psychological issues. I think parents should be more involved with there children's lives. That may prevent further problems.
5. Concluding Approach: Prediction
6. The conclusion summarized the essay. Nobody really knows why people get eating
disorders. When doctors diagnose eating disorders they have to look at all circumstances surrounding the child. I believe it is difficult for doctors to do. Many woman feel that in order to look like a super model they have to give up food and starve themselves to the point where they are so skinny and grose looking. They do this to look beautiful on the outside. They do not realize that they look bad and are slowly killing themselves.

The writer's desk
I would like to be famous. Famous people get everything they want. I would love to be able to have all the things that I want. There are some things that famous people have to go through that I would hate. When you are famous, you do not get to take your family anywhere without the media in your face. You can not go on a date with someone and have a good time because the media is all over the place. I am the type of person who loves to go places and you can not do that if you are really famous. I would like to have the money that famous people have. I would be able to buy a house and a new car.
The writer's desk
There are many sports that I love to do. One of them is skiing. I learned how to ski when I was 8 years old. I lived in Colorado for a few years and me and my family would go to the mountains every winter. I was scared when I first started. IO took lessons and got better as time went on. I used to go down the hill fast. I have not been skiing in a very long time. I would love to go again and take more lessons to refresh my memory.
The writer's desk
I have five tattoos on my body. The first tattoo that I got was when I was fifteen years old. I put my name on my right ankle. I was not very mature at the time so I thought it would be cool to get one. Well it was not as cool as I thought. People ask me if I got it so I would not forget my name. I did not think that was very funny. The second tattoo I got was my son Christians' name on the upper right side of my back. I got that one when I gave birth to him. He was my first born so it was very special. It has his name under praying hands. The third tattoo I got was on my chest. It is a rose with a butterfly. It also has my dad's name in a ribbon. I got it when he died a few years ago. The fourth tattoo I got was my daughter's name on my left arm. She was the second born. The fifth tattoo I got was my astrological sign on my left ankle. It is the sign of the Libra. These are all the tattoo's I have.

My family and I are very diverse. I come from a mother that is white and a father that is Hispanic. I am Mexican- American. when I am asked what race I am, I like to say I am Mexican. I don't know how to speak Spanish but I can understand it. I would have liked to grow up with my dad so I could have been taught to speak Spanish and cook all the Delicious meals my grandmother used to. My cousins come from different backgrounds also. Filipino and Hawaiian are the two cultures they come from. So as you can see we are all different.

Essay # 3
The third essay that I chose was, The Revolt of the Unfit, by Nicholas Murray Butler. In the introduction the author gives general information. His thesis statement is in the first paragraph. It reads, there are wars and rumors of wars in the portion of the territory occupied by the doctrine of organic evolution.
The introduction was not effective because I do not understand what he is talking about. He needs to define the words he uses in hi essay. The conclusion technique that the author used to conclude his essay was a quotation. I do not like quotes at the end of essays because it does not seem to bring everything together.

Essay # 2
The title of my second essay is Calvin. This essay was written by Charles Dudley Warner. The author used a surprising statement in his introduction. His thesis statement is Calvin is dead. This thesis statement is good. It makes me want to read on and see what the essay is about. The author used an opinion for his conclusion. It was effective. The conclusion summarized the entire essay and showed the purpose for it. The conclusion left no loose ends to the essay.
Essay #1
For my first essay I chose to read is Gifts, by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The author used a quotation for his introduction to the essay. His thesis statement was, " It is said that the world is in a state of bankruptcy, that the world owes the world more than it can pay, and ought to go into chancery, and be sold." The introductory paragraph was not effective to me because It did not catch my attention. I did not get into the essay. The author did not spell right so it was hard to understand. The technique the author used to conclude the essay was another poem, that did not make sense to me. This essay is weird.

Obama's Speech
On November 4, 2008, history will be changed forever. Our new presedent, Barack Obama was elected to run this country. He gave a speech in Chicago that I think touched a lot of people. He stated that, "we are, and always will be, the United States of America". I really liked this quote because our nation is torn right now. I am hoping that Obama can fix the problems that we have in our economy caused by the division of our country. I voted for Obama and I hope he makes me proud.

Contraversy
Well as we all know, today is election day. Our future president will be chosen tonight. I voted this afternoon and I voted for Obama. I fell he can make the changes we need right now. The republican party has messed up our economy and it is affecting all of us. This is also the first time I have voted. I felt it was my right and responsibility to do so. I also voted no on Prop. 8. I fell that it is none of our business who loves who or how people want to express their feelings about each other. It doesn't bother me at all if two people want to be married.

The Writers World
We are starting a new class now. English. I have three goals for this class.
1. To be able to write better sentences.
2. To be able to spell better.
3. To pass the class.
The way I am going to obtain these goals is by coming to class on time, listening to the teacher, and doing my work to the best of my ability.
The topic I have chosen for my essay is, Should the death penalty be an option for certain crimes, or should it be abolished in favor of life in prison without the possibility of parole?

I also have never been afraid of to speak my mind or been afraid to show my emotions. I have been this way all my life and hav'nt had a problem. I am not rude about anything so I don't come off in a rude manner.

60 Second Speaches
In our class we have been doing 60 second speeches to prepare us for our SLO. I really like this idea because it is getting us ready. It is also helping us become more relaxed as we speak in front of the class. I personally don't have a problem with talking infront of groups, but I am aware that some people do. So I think that this is a way to help . I have been doing my speeches on things that are going on in the world. I am trying to inform people of things they might not know.

Conflict Styles
There are five conflict styles that are used by people everyday. There is avoidance which is when someone wants to side-step confrontation; finds conflict uncomfortable. A lose- lose approach to conflict.
There is Accommodation, which is when a person easily gives in to the demands of others; typically wants to be liked by others.
There is also competition, when a person tries to dominate the discussion and wants to accomplish the goal even at the expense of others.
There is also compromise when a person seeks the middle ground; will give up something to get something. A lose/ win approach.
The last is collaboration which is when a person views a conflict as a problem to be solved; negotiates to achieve a positive solution for all involved in the conflict.
I personally think that I use the competition approach to conflict. I seem to want to be in control of the conversation. If I feel I am right I will not stop until I win. It may not be the right thing to do. If I could pick another approach to use I would use comprimise and maybe collaboration. It would be a win/ win situation.

Today in class we talked about how we communicate. How we feel in group discussions and meetings. The categories were: Group Discussion, Meetings, Interpersonal Communication, and Public Speaking. In this test we were scored on how we feel in each of these subjects. I scored a 7, 8, 10, 20. This means I am comfortable with group discussion, meetings, interpersonal communication. But I am not very good with public speaking. I get nervous when I have to talk in front of people. If I prepare well and practice I think I can do better.
